This seasonal, part-time position is responsible for working under the direction of David Hymovitz ‘92 the Van Whisnand ’62 Head Coach for Boys Varsity Hockey, and the JV Boys Hockey program, as assistant boys JV hockey coach.
This includes promoting a culture and practice of excellence and sportsmanship consistent with the philosophy and policies of Thayer Academy and the program’s long history of achievement.
The JV boys assistant hockey coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in all aspects of the junior varsity boys hockey program including managing practices and games, working with head coaches, communicating with families and the Thayer Athletic Department, and supporting student-athletes in the college recruitment process.
Roles and Responsibilities
Partner with David Hymovitz ‘92 the Van Whisnand ’62 Head Coach for Boys Varsity Hockey and the head boys JV hockey coach in support of student-athlete recruitment and retention
Assist in the supervision, development, and execution of effective practices, prepare athletes for competition, and support meaningful skills building and growth among all players
Assist in instructing players on the rules and fundamentals of high school ice hockey
Assist in maintaining athletic rosters and managing team attendance
Attend all Thayer Academy Seasonal Coaches’ Meetings
Assist head coach in providing timely game reports immediately following a contest
Travel with the team on school-provided transportation
Follow all safety practices and Thayer Academy policies as outlined in the Student Handbook and Coaches’ Handbook, including the policies against hazing and bullying
Support a program culture of respect, inclusion, belonging, and exceptional sportsmanship
Other duties as assigned
Substantial coaching and/or competitive experience
Detailed understanding of the rules of high school boys' hockey
History and practice of exemplary sportsmanship and role modeling appropriate behavior with student-athletes
Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills including a cooperative, professional, and collaborative work ethic
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
Occasional lifting and moving equipment, bending, and moving on ice
Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, standing, and skating
Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks and function in a fast-paced working environment
The Athletics department is a busy work environment in which there is a significant amount of personal interaction
The Coach must be flexible, enthusiastic, hard-working, and responsible
The Thayer Sports Center and ISL hockey rinks are cold environments.
Must be able to work in a cold environment and be able to skate
Must have a valid driver’s license
Thayer Academy is a non-smoking campus
